A woman who was found deceased in the Sandy Bay RCMP detachment in 2021 died of acute alcohol intoxication, a coroner’s jury has found.

The inquest into the death of Marlene Marie Bear started this past Monday and concluded on Wednesday in Creighton.

A six-person jury concluded her death was accidental and the result of alcohol use.

Bear was found deceased in her cell at the Sandy Bay RCMP detachment 17 minutes after midnight on July 5, 2021.

According to a provincial statement at the time, attempts were made to revive her but were not successful.

The jury made multipole recommendations to the RCMP, including that all guards be trained to the level of First Responder and that officers learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning.

A broader recommendation was also made that there should be an in-patient addictions treatment facility within a reasonable geographical area.
