Most campgrounds in Lac La Ronge Provincial Park now closed

Most campgrounds in the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park are now closed for the season.

That’s according to park manager Natasha Merriman, who explained Nut Point, Nemeiben Lake, Wadin Bay, Little Deer, MacKay Lake and Churchill River Campgrounds are all closed as of Tuesday.

Campgrounds that remain open are Missinipe and Devil Lake Campgrounds.

“We try to keep those ones open until Sept. 30, but it is really weather dependent,” she said.

“The water system at Missinipe, if it starts to freeze, we have to shut that down. It could be the third week in September, but we try to keep them open until the end of September.”

Merriman noted it was a busy summer for the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park with the number of visitors on par with 2022. She added tourists come to the region for fishing, canoeing, boating, hiking, the beauty of the park and quieter camping.

With most campgrounds now closed, staff will begin getting them ready for the winter. That involves a complete shutdown of facilities, cleaning, minor repairs and pulling out waterlines.

“There is a discount code for camping in September, so make sure people are checking in at the park office,” Merriman said. “We don’t do reservations online, but we do have the self-registration, so they can call the park office and check in with us to book a campsite.”

Meanwhile, the Lac La Ronge Visitor Centre in Air Ronge remains closed. A new manager was hired last month and Woodlands and Waterways is currently in the reopening process.

Part of that process includes a feedback survey where the public can provide their insight, opinions and ideas. The survey can be found online here.
