Mintos forward Pickford signs with WHL’s Royals

Sep 9, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Logan Pickford has turned a new page in his hockey career.

The Mintos forward put pen to paper on Tuesday, signing a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Victoria Royals after an impressive outing at the team’s training camp. While there, he scored twice and added a pair of assists in five games.

“Logan had a great summer of training which was reflected in his on-ice and off-ice fitness testing scores,” said Jake Heisinger, Victoria’s Associate General Manager. “Logan is a hard-working player that skates well and will contribute at both ends of the ice. We are excited to welcome Logan and his family to Victoria.”

Pickford spent almost all of the 2022-23 season with Prince Albert, potting 25 goals and 16 assists in 43 games. When he wasn’t in the Green and Gold, the Saskatoon product was with the SJHL’s Weyburn Red Wings where he spent three games, scoring one goal.

“He’s a fantastic young man, he’s very driven,” said Mintos Head Coach Tim Leonard. “He’s worked really hard these last few summers, he’s as strong as a horse, and the best thing about him is the kid can skate – flat out fly. He seems to be one of those kids too [when] he gets the chance to score, he doesn’t miss it too many times. We’re pretty excited for Logan and we hope that it works out for him.”

Pickford was named to the club’s 35-man preseason roster on Friday and will make his Royals debut on Saturday against the Prince George Cougars.

The Mintos are set to begin their season on Sept. 23 when they host the Regina Pat Canadians at 1:30 p.m. inside the Art Hauser Centre.
