P.A. Police recapture annual Terry Fox Relay Race title

After falling to the Prince Albert Fire Department in 2022, the Prince Albert Police Service has reclaimed the Terry Fox Relay Race title at Harry Jerome Track at Prime Minister’s Park.

Members of the Prince Albert Police Service, Prince Albert Fire Department, and Parkland Ambulance took part in the race with either team donating $500 to the Terry Fox Fund for cancer research, totaling $1,500.

The police won the race a full second ahead of the other teams where the coach Sgt. Josh Peterson said it was nice to come out on top amongst the friendly rivalry between the first responders.

“We all recognize each other from essentially working together on major calls but at the end of the day, it’s fun when you can beat your friends in an athletic competition and hold it over them for the next year,” he said.

He added that it is always a worthwhile experience when competing as the race is for a great cause.

“It’s a pretty good feeling and that’s one of the rewards of being a police officer is being able to give back to the community,” Peterson said.

Along with Peterson on the winning PAPS relay team was Troy Preymack, Joey Hockley, Logan Cheswyk, and Tanner Schultz.

Vern Hodgins, member of the organizing committee for the Terry Fox Foundation said the relay race is always a highlight for him.

“These guys are put their uniforms on every day going to work and they’re heroes and here they are on their off day, they’re not wearing their uniform but they’re raising money for cancer research in support of Terry Fox so I really appreciate it.”

The race was held a little over a week before Prince Albert’s Terry Fox run on Sept. 17. The yearly event will take place at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse.

A day earlier on Sept. 16, members of the Terry Fox organizing committee will be hosting a fundraising BBQ and bake sale for the Terry Fox Foundation at the Aurora Show and Shine at Aurora Chiropractic, Massage Therapy and Health Centre in Prince Albert.
