Stanley Cup champion special guest for Ice Wolves Sportsman’s Dinner

Former NHLer and Stanley Cup champion André Roy will headline the Ice Wolves Sportsman’s Dinner on Saturday.

Roy will be coming to La Ronge from his home near Montreal for the upcoming event at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. He will make a short speech, answer questions from attendees and mingle with the crowd.

“It will be mostly questions from people, but for my part, I think I will just introduce myself and talk a little bit about my career and the ups and downs of it,” Roy explained.

“I will bring my Stanley Cup ring with me also to share it with the people of La Ronge. I’ll just talk about my career in general and just make sure we have fun.”

Roy played 12 seasons with the NHL starting with the Boston Bruins for one season in 1995. He joined the Ottawa Senators in 1999 and remained with that team for three years, before playing with Tampa Bay Lightning between 2001 and 2004, and again from 2006 to 2008.

Roy also played with the Pittsburgh Penguins for two seasons (2005 to 2007) and he finished his career in the 2008-2009 season with the Calgary Flames. He was on the Tampa Bay roster when the team won the Stanley Cup in 2004.

“I love hockey. I still go to Tampa and places like that to watch a game and meet a lot of former players and people who I played or worked with throughout my career, and that keeps me busy and keeps it fun,” he said.

Since his retirement from the NHL, Roy has worked in the media industry in Montreal. He was the co-host of the program Hors-Jeu 2.0 for 10 years, where he would go on the road and interview hockey players from mostly Quebec.

Roy also attends 12 to 15 functions like the Sportsman’s Dinner every year. His visit to La Ronge on Saturday will be his first time coming to northern Saskatchewan.

“I’m looking forward to come there [since] Coach Kaminski reached out to me. We did an event together and we talked a little bit. I think he kind of liked a little bit of my personality and asked me if I would be willing to come down,” he noted.

“I said it would be great because I am always open to coming to different places and meeting some new people and share my story. I’m a guy who likes to have fun and I am looking forward to meeting everyone, the team, and people in general.”

Tickets for the Sportsman’s Dinner are $60 per person or $800 for a corporate table. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-306-425-8189.

There will also be a silent auction with cocktails starting at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m.
