Hawks hit highway for three game road trip

Oct 20, 2023 | 2:00 PM

The Nipawin Hawks will hit the highway to Weyburn as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team starts a three-game road trip Friday.

During a modest two-game winning streak and three-game point streak, the Hawks will take on the Red Wings for the first time this season at Crescent Point Place before Nipawin battles Estevan on Saturday and concludes the southern swing in Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon.

Hawks Head Coach Tad Kozun said he likes to schedule one of their trips down south early in the season to help build the teams’ chemistry.

“It’s nice to get out there, they get to hang out in the hotel rooms, be in the same spot, they can’t really get away from each other, and just have that team bonding stuff on the bus and that kind of stuff. It should be a good one,” Kozun said.

Nipawin is coming off wins over Humboldt and La Ronge, their record of five wins, three losses, and a shootout loss has the Hawks sitting in fourth place in the SJHL standings. Now in his third year behind the Nipawin bench, Kozun said their goals are different heading into the three-game weekend, but the Red Wings can’t be overlooked.

“It would be nice to come home with six points, but we can’t look past tonight,” Kozun said. “Weyburn is playing good hockey right now too and we must be ready. We need to take each game and be ready for each one.”

The Red Wings are tied with the Hawks in the standings, but coming off a tough loss to the Hounds who were winless until a 4-2 victory over Weyburn. Kozun expects the Red Wings to bounce back.

“We have learned in this league nothing comes easy and you have to make sure to work for it or you’re going to end up on the wrong side of it,” he concluded.

Faceoff is at 7 p.m., the game will be broadcast on 750 Beach Radio beginning at 6:45 p.m.
