The Nipawin Hawks had their three game point streak snapped after a 6-2 loss in Weyburn Friday in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

Meeting the Red Wings for the first time this season, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead on Landon Pappas’ first career SJHL goal, but the celebrations ended there.

Weyburn took a 2-1 lead in the second period, Nipawin’s Braxton Buckberger tied the game with his fifth goal of the season late in the middle period as the teams were deadlocked going to the final frame.

The Red Wings scored four times in the third to runaway with the game and take an early lead in the season series.

Coming into the game Nipawin hadn’t allowed a shorthanded goal against and scored six while down a man. Weyburn scored three goals shorthanded, another two on the power-play, two telling tales of the result. Nipawin Assistant Coach Levi Stuart agreed the game wasn’t a stellar one for the black-and-gold.

“Special teams have been the difference maker for us in these last few games and we knew it was going to be the same story here tonight,” Stuart said on the postgame show. “It just comes down to execution, want to and will to.”

The Hawks continue their road trip in Estevan Saturday against the Bruins. Nipawin hasn’t won a regular season game at Affinity Place since Jan. 25, 2017. Stuart said the team has overcome hurdles in North Battleford and Humboldt already this season, picking up two points and snapping an eight game regular season losing streak in Estevan is next on their agenda.

“For our group here, the guys that were here last year it’s a place we didn’t get a win in. We’re definitely looking to break that and go in there and bounce back to how we were playing last weekend and get back to Hawks’ hockey,” Stuart concluded.

Faceoff is 7 p.m., the pregame show of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey on CJVR begins at 6:45 p.m.
