The Nipawin Hawks bolstered their lineup Monday adding 20-year-old forward Alex Bernauer from the OCN Blizzard.

The 2003-born centreman started the season with the El Paso Rhinos of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) scoring once and adding an assist in nine games played. Last year Bernauer scored 24 goals and had 33 assists in 49 games played for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Blizzard. Nipawin Assistant Coach Dana Dirks said the team is elated to add Bernauer to their roster.

“He gives us a chance to bring in a 20-year-old guy that has scored at every level,” he said after the announcement of the deal. “He has a lot of familiarity with Braxton [Buckberger] as well, they were linemates in minor hockey. We’re very excited to have Alex on board.”

Nipawin acquired Bernauer for a player development fee.

He is expected to be in the lineup Tuesday when Nipawin hosts the Flin Flon Bombers at the Centennial Arena. Faceoff is 7 p.m.

Nipawin is coming off a road trip on the weekend where they lost two of three. The team will get a rest after Tuesday’s game versus Flin Flon, not playing again until Sunday.
