Late goal sinks Hawks versus Bombers

The Nipawin Hawks went toe-to-toe with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) top team Tuesday, but a late goal gave Flin Flon a 3-2 win at the ‘Cage.’

The Bombers downed the Hawks 5-3 back on Sept. 22 on the first day of the season, so the Hawks were looking to event the season series against Flin Flon, a team still without a regulation loss and riding a nine game winning streak. The Bombers jumped out to a two goal lead in the first, but NIapwin responded scoring late in the opening frame and early in the second. Joel Mabin notched his third goal of the campaign, Evan Forrest picked up his team leading seventh on the power-play. However an odd man rush late in the third, finished by Bomber Captain Justin Lies was the difference. Hawks Head Coach Tad Kozun was proud of his team following the loss.

“I thought the guys showed a lot of heart,” Kozun said after the game. “Getting down 2-0 early, battled back, get a couple big goals. I thought some guys had their best games of the year. Our fourth line with the young guys came through and I thought Tyson Endall was really good in net too.”

The Hawks will now get some down time as they are off until the weekend. Sitting with a record of six wins and six losses, plus a shootout defeat Kozun feels the team can now regroup and start to build some momentum.

“It is time now to regroup and get on a roll. Obviously with our acquisition of Alex [Bernauer], he’ll hopefully be in the lineup on Sunday, he’ll add a big boost to our group. Hopefully we can get healthy here and get on a roll,” Kozun said.

Sunday’s game versus the Notre Dame Hounds will faceoff at 3 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
