Hawks get Klipped in Kindersley

Nov 1, 2023 | 12:29 PM

The Nipawin Hawks started strong on the road on Tuesday in SJHL action, but the Klippers flew past Nipawin 5-3.

Looking for its second straight win, Nipawin jumped out to a lead in the first period courtesy Eric Hoiness. The Hawks nursed the lead until late in the second period. Heading to the third period tied 1-1, Kindersley killed a Nipawin power-play then proceeded to score two goals in 12 seconds to take a 3-1 lead.

The Hawks clawed back as Finley Radloff shovelled a rebound past Cody Jaman to cut the lead to one, but Nipawin would allow two more to drop their record back to .500. Head Coach Tad Kozun wasn’t pleased after the game.

“I thought we had a good first five minutes, we were outshooting them 9-2, and then I don’t know what flipped on us. We became a completely different hockey team. Yeah, it wasn’t good,” he lamented on the postgame show.

The Hawks record now sits at seven wins, seven regulation losses and a loss in a shootout. The club hasn’t won back-to-back games since Oct. 14 and 15, they have yet to win more than two games in a row. Kozun said that needs to change starting this weekend against Humboldt.

“We have to start playing our best hockey, we have to find the consistency every day,” Kozun said. “This Jekyll and Hyde, up-and-down riding the mountain wave, or rollercoaster, it’s not a lot of fun.”

Next up for Nipawin is a home-and-home series this weekend with the Humboldt Broncos. Friday Humboldt travels to the Centennial Arena, Saturday the Hawks are on the road.
