Meadow Lake’s the Door of Hope saw a strong show of support at the recent community Fall Supper fundraiser to give a boost to the organization that helps those in need.

The Door of Hope provides both the Food Bank service and breakfast and lunch meals in the community.

Executive Director Delton Sylvain said he was thrilled with the success of the initiative.

“I feel so happy that the community can come together to help the Food Bank and also the Door of Hope,” he said.

About 400 people came out for the dinner event at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre on Oct. 22.

A total of $4,337 in funds and 565 pounds of non perishable food items were donated to the Door of Hope. As well, $1,485 was donated to the Meadow Lake and District Humane Society.

A number of volunteers and sponsors also provided support for the event.

The Door of Hope has an important role in the Meadow Lake community. In 2022, the organization served 17,815 meals; provided 2,301 food hampers to families in need, and 120,507 pounds of food to the community. The Door of Hope also provided children with food security 3,452 times.

Sylvain said the need is even greater this year.

“Because of food prices and the cost of living, at our Food Bank the demand has been going up,” he said. “Also, the amount of people coming to our doors for lunches [is increasing].”

Sylvain added it comes down to the community to do their part to help the community’s less fortunate.

“I just want to encourage people to go to their local Food Bank,” he said. “With small amounts they can make a big change. I believe that if they can give us a can of food, or $5 or $2, or $1, it’s better than doing nothing. And, they can change a life.”
