Rivalry renewed

Hawks host Broncos for game one of home-and-home

The Nipawin Hawks and Humboldt Broncos will renew their rivalry Friday when the two teams meet for the third time this season.

In October these teams played twice on a weekend with each club picking up 3-2 wins in the other teams’ rink.

The Broncos earned an extra point in the overtime loss at the Elgar Petersen Arena on Oct. 14.

Since then, Humboldt has continued to win and hasn’t suffered a regulation loss through 13 games. Nipawin has struggled to take off this year sitting with a winning percentage of .500, however, the team has not manufactured more than back-to-back wins but hasn’t lost more than twice in a row through 15 games. Most recently was a disappointing 5-3 loss to Kindersley Tuesday. Head Coach Tad Kozun said his team needs to be better against the SJHL’s second-ranked team.

“I expect a much different team this weekend,” he said Friday morning. “We obviously needed to work out some kinks and hopefully we got things settled back down and we’re ready to go this weekend.”

The result against the Klippers was more disappointing for Kozun and the club, the loss followed a spirited home-ice win over Notre Dame at the Centennial Arena last Sunday. Highly touted acquisitions Artem Hrabovetskyi and Alex Bernauer each scored highlight-reel goals in their debuts. Kozun admitted the team was blindsided with needs on the blueline heading into training camp, however, Kozun said the team needs to get over the retooling.

“There are no excuses left anymore, we’re on game 14 or 15, whatever it is now. It’s time to go out there and prove what we can do,” Kozun huffed.

The weekend set begins at the ‘Cage’ in Nipawin at 7 p.m. Friday. The fourth and final meeting of the year is Saturday in Humboldt. If the playoffs began today, the clubs would face off against each other again, just like last year. Kozun said the next two games are important in all aspects.

“I expect another big weekend and we have to make sure we bring our ‘A’ game both nights,” he said.
