Hawks rout Millionaires for second straight road win

The Nipawin Hawks routed the Melville Millionaires Tuesday 6-1 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

Meeting the Millionaires for the second time of six on the year and seeking another win over Melville after Nipawin took game one of the season series 4-2 on Nov. 7. The Hawks got down early, but rebounded with a half a dozen unanswered goals leading to the rout. Luc Bydal opened the scoring at the 3:18 mark of the first period on a Melville power-play giving the home side the lead, however Finley Radloff tied the game with his sixth goal of the year to knot the score 1-1.

With the score still tied in the second period, Joel Mabin scored his sixth goal of the season, Artem Hrabovetskyi added two power-play goals to push his total to six goals on the year, as the Hawks took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission. Mabin said the team played well and his game winner was a beneficial bounce that spring-boarded the team to the win.

“We started the game really good,” the 20-year-old forward told northeastNOW after the game. “I got a little lucky bounce in the slot, I honestly thought it was in the corner, not on the net. I was going to forecheck and I [saw] it was in. I got pretty excited.”

Both of Hrabovetskyi’s goals were scored during goalmouth scrambles, and Jockims second marker was a result of driving hard to the net as well. Mabin said those types of goals are needed to help the team be successful.

“Pretty much all our goals were in the paint today, that’s how we must play our games. Just get pucks on net, get second chances on net. That’s how we will win games all year,” he said.

Braeden Jockims added two goals in the third period, the 18-year-old Saskatoon product now has four goals in three games after being reassigned by the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. Jockims two goals Tuesday came just 29 seconds apart in the third period.

Tyson Endall made 23 stops in the Nipawin net for the victory. The Hawks will now prepare for a home-and-home series this weekend with the surging Battlefords North Stars starting Friday on the road. Mabin said with back-to-back wins in their pocket the club wants to finally put a winning streak together.

“It’s a huge weekend,” Mabin added. “We’ve never been able to string a lot of games together. I think this is our opportunity to win quite a few in row. If we play well, we should be able to take our two this weekend too.”

Faceoff on Friday is 7:30 p.m. at the Access Communications Centre, the pregame show of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey will begin at 7:15 p.m. on 750 Beach Radio.
