Stars shoot past Hawks with late surge

Nov 26, 2023 | 3:46 PM

The Nipawin Hawks were stunned 4-3 Saturday at the Centennial Arena after the North Stars scored three times in the final six minutes giving the Battlefords the weekend sweep in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) home-and-home weekend series.

The North Stars won three of the four games between the teams this year including Friday’s 6-3 win in North Battleford.

In both games this weekend, the Hawks blew two-goal leads, unfortunately for Nipawin they couldn’t get out of the final six minutes with the margin, something Head Coach Tad Kozun said stung after the game.

“They obviously pushed us,” he said. “You could tell by the shots in the third period [21-5, North Stars] and we just got back on our heels. You just have to find a way to play a full 60 minutes. We’ve obviously talked about it a lot, you have to play a full 60 minutes or that stuff will happen.”

Finley Radloff opened the scoring in the first period, Artem Hrabovetskyi scored his first of two goals in the opening period as well giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The North Stars cut the lead in half in the second period, but Hrabovetskyi’s second goal and eighth of the year restored Nipawin’s two-goal lead, which held until the 14:20 mark of the third.

The North Stars scored three unanswered goals to steal the win, stunning the crowd at the ‘Cage.’ Kozun said the game changed for the worse in the second intermission and the staff is now looking for answers.

“You have to play the game to win, you can’t have any doubt that you have to go protect the lead. The first two periods they didn’t generate much then all of a sudden, we got away from it and we have to find out why,” Kozun questioned.

Damon Cunningham suffered the loss in goal making 34 saves.

Nipawin will travel to Yorkton to take on the Terriers on Tuesday. Nipawin has already lost twice to the Terriers this season. After the game the Hawks are on an eight-day break, Kozun said another loss going into the gap will not sit well with the organization.

“We’ve got to find the right recipe here because we have to start winning hockey games,” he lamented. “Levi [Stuart, assistant coach], Dana [Dirks, assistant general manager], and I we believe way too much in this group to be where we are. We’ve got to find a way and we’ve got to do it quickly.”

Faceoff is 7 p.m. from Westland Arena, the game will be on 750 Beach Radio beginning at 6:45 p.m.
