Hawks soar into Yorkton for tangle with Terriers

Nov 28, 2023 | 10:51 AM

The Nipawin Hawks will travel to Yorkton Tuesday looking for their first win against the Terriers this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

The matchup at Westland Arena will be the third meeting of the season between the two with Yorkton scoring five goals in each win. One Nov. 10 in Nipawin, the second coming Nov. 16 at the SJHL Showcase in Warman.

The Hawks have lost two straight after back-to-back losses against the Battlefords North Stars on the weekend. In those games the Hawks let two goal leads slip away on several occasions. It’s something Head Coach Tad Kozun said he hopes the team can build from.

“Good learning curve for our group,” he said. “It’s something we have to learn from, and take in. I know we have to be better.”

Nipawin will have eight days off from game action following Tuesday’s game in Yorkton. The Hawks are a game below the .500 winning percentage point and have struggled with consistency this season. However, Kozun feels the team’s first half struggles will make them stronger going into Christmas and the new year.

“You’ve got to deal with adversity and this kind of stuff. It makes you stronger in the end. We still believe in our group and like what we have,” Kozun said.

Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Yorkton. The game can be heard on 750 Beach Radio beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Kozun said Tuesday’s game is crucial as the club wants to be able to look forward going into the break and not pondering the past.

“You want to go into this break we have here with a good taste in your mouth and be able to work on the things we need to take these steps forward. It obviously starts tonight, we need a full 60-minute effort, we need everyone going,” he concluded.
