Nipawin’s Finley Radloff had his first Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) hat trick Tuesday in Yorkton versus the Terriers, but it was Moose Jaw’s Jacob Michelson stealing the spotlight getting his first goal and the game winner in a 6-3 Hawks’ win.

The Hawks traveled to Westland Arena for the first time this season looking for their first victory against Yorkton after suffering a pair of losses earlier in November.

Radloff opened the scoring in the first period, Artem Hrabovetskyi also tickled the twine giving Nipawin a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Radloff scored again in the second giving the visitors a 3-0 cushion going into the final frame.

The Terriers bounced back scoring twice cutting the lead to 3-2 in the last period, but Michelson was able to beat Adam Kelly making the score 4-2 and restoring the Hawks momentum. The 18-year-old said finally getting his first was a moment he won’t forget.

“It feels amazing,” he said after the game. “I had so many chances and that’s the one that went in. It felt great.”

Radloff added his third and Braxton Buckberger capped the Hawks’ scoring with an empty net goal. Radloff has 10 goals on the year, Hrabovetskyi and Buckberger each have nine goals.

The Hawks snapped their two game losing streak and evened their record with the win, their seventh on the road this year. Michelson said getting back in the win column was important.

“It was, we needed that. It was a good third period effort, I thought everyone really bought in in the final 10 minutes. We definitely did the right things,” he said.

Nipawin now has eight days off before their next game on Dec. 6 at home versus Weyburn. The lengthy break is much needed for the team that has played an SJHL high 27 games. Michelson said the time off will heal some bodies and allow the team to bond off the ice, and on in preparation of the second half.

“Give the body some rest, and kind of come together as a team and try and build away from the rink. We’ll have a few days to practice and regroup for next week,” he added.
