Hawks return to the ice versus Weyburn

Dec 6, 2023 | 11:04 AM

After an eight-day break that saw the Nipawin Hawks see some changes off the ice, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team is back in action Wednesday.

The Hawks will entertain the Weyburn Red Wings at the Centennial Arena as the SJHL club starts their five-game December schedule. Following the recent trades to add Liam McInnis and moving out three roster players Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team now must focus on the next couple weeks.

“The biggest message is, don’t be looking at the Christmas break,” Kozun said. “When the five games are over the guys will be out of here, they can go home for Christmas and do their thing, but we have to take care of business.”

Weyburn is making their first trip to Nipawin this season. The teams met on Oct. 20 at Crescent Point Place, a game the Red Wings cruised to a 6-2 win.

Nipawin will also host the Estevan Bruins for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday as the league’s most southern team visits the ‘Cage’ for their two matchups. Following that the Hawks will close the 2023 portion of their schedule against the Melfort Mustangs in a home-and-home on Dec. 15 and 16.

Sitting in sixth in the SJHL standings, Kozun admitted that wasn’t sitting well with the staff of the club. Now will the deals Kozun made this past week, he expects his team to battle hard against their opponents in the month that are all battling for position ahead of the break.

“It’s a big five games against teams that are right there with us. We have to be focused, we have to be prepared, we have to be ready to go,” he said.

All three home games this week will faceoff at 7 p.m., doors open at 5:45 p.m.
