Melfort Food Bank challenge in full swing

Dec 12, 2023 | 3:12 PM

Bragging rights for a great cause.

The Melfort RCMP Detachment and the Melfort Fire Department are going head-to-head in a fun challenge to see who can bring in the most food donations in what’s being called the ‘Melfort Food Bank Challenge.’

RCMP Cpl. Sheila Cochrane said she and others in the office wanted to come up with a way to help people during the holiday season. The idea was then struck to challenge local firefighters to see which group could compile the most donations for the Melfort Food Bank.

Despite the friendly rivalry, Cochrane says Deputy Fire Chief Doug Walsh and the Fire Department have been great to work with to make the event a success. However, both sides want to emerge victorious.

“The friendly competition is getting a little more intense as the deadline approaches,” Cochrane added. “It’s going to be close here on who has the most donations for the Food Bank.”

The competition is open through Friday, and according to Cochrane, there is a little gamesmanship going on as the deadline gets closer.

“Doug (Walsh) has been pretty tight-lipped; he won’t tell us where his donations are being kept. It’s an undisclosed location so I think he’s worried that we may go in and cheat,” she jokes.

Walsh confirmed he put the food in a location that will not be named saying tongue-in-cheek that he had to do so to protect the stash.

Despite some trash talking, it’s clear both sides enjoy the competition.

“It has been so much fun,” Cochrane said. “I anticipate doing this every December now.”

Her competitor agrees.

“It’s always fun to do a challenge between our department and the RCMP,” Walsh added.

However, he couldn’t help stirring the pot a little.

“I always like to kid (Cochrane) a little bit that, you know, she should be getting used to losing by now,” he said.

While the RCMP and local fire department compete, there will be one winner overall.

“The Food Bank will be the winner, and peopel that have to use the food bank services,” Walsh said. “Ultimately they’ll be the ones who win in this whole thing.”

There are a few more days to help tip the scales toward the fire department or the RCMP.

Police cruisers will be parked at the Prairie North Co-op Grocery Store on Thursday, and Cindy’s Your Independent Grocer on Friday, both from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Food donations will be accepted at the RCMP detachment and city hall (for the fire department) until 4 p.m. on Friday. Anyone who can’t make it before then can donate at the Melfort Mustangs game on Friday, with members from both the RCMP and local fire department in attendance.

Both sides will go the weigh scales on Saturday to see who takes the bragging rights, with the winning side also receiving a meal sponsored by TJ’s Pizza.

TJ’s owners Tara and Lloyd Muntain put a call out last weekend to those who wanted to donate cash for them to shop for food to add to the total.

“It was a great feeling to come together, especially before Christmas, and do something great for our community,” Tara told northeastNOW.

They were able to purchase over $1,200 worth of food at that time.
