After a memorable season in 2023, Prince Albert Lacrosse players and teams were recognized as the best in the province last weekend.

The Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) held its awards ceremony this past Saturday in Saskatoon with members of the Prince Albert Predators Junior Team taking home some of the top awards.

Mason Hawkes won two awards at the gala for Male Athlete of The Year as well as Defensive Player of the Year. The goaltender ended the season with a Goals Against Average of 4.55, going unbeaten in regulation during the campaign.

Brayden Rieger was also a big winner, claiming the Most Valuable Player Award. Rieger led all players in the PGLL in goals with 38 and added 43 assists for 81 points.

Finally, the Predators as a whole won the Team of the Year Award for Saskatchewan Lacrosse after claiming the league championship in June. They beat the Swift Current Wolverines 12-11 in overtime in the championship game in Regina.

For head coach Lucas Wells, he wasn’t surprised at the recognition for his players, knowing how hard they practised and how much work they put into each game.

“For them to get their recognition, it’s nice. I couldn’t be happier for the guys. Everything that they’ve gotten this year they’ve earned, and I couldn’t be happier for them.”

Wells touched on what it was like to represent Prince Albert at the PGLL Awards, going up against programs in Saskatoon and Regina that have seen a lot of success at the junior and senior levels in recent years.

He said that winning the award for Prince Albert Lacrosse means that players don’t have to leave home to play the sport at a top level.

“We have a good program in P.A.; we don’t have to go play somewhere else, we can be competitive,” he said. “We will get our flowers, to say the least, to get a little bit of recognition and ultimately, we will win some games and we will win the league hopefully again next year and Saskatchewan Lacrosse kind of takes note of that. So, it’s nice, I think it’s important.”

Very soon, the grounds at the Kinsmen Arena will be busy for lacrosse season.

“We are starting our Winter Camp on Wednesday. We’ll be going every Wednesday up until ice is out of the Kinsmen (arena) and then training camp, and that’ll be right into the season,” he said. “The season kind of sneaks up on us quicker than expected.”

While the official schedule has not been released, the PGLL schedule will likely be in late April.
