Hawks head to Flin Flon in rescheduled matchup

Jan 17, 2024 | 2:36 PM

The Nipawin Hawks will travel to Flin Flon Wednesday for a showdown with the Bombers, in a game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 12.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) clubs had the game postponed due to the extremely cold temperatures across the Prairies last week.

The Hawks are coming off a 4-2 loss Sunday in Melville. The Hawks put 45 shots on goal in the loss, but Head Coach Tad Kozun feels his team still didn’t play a good game.

“We have to make sure to have focus and compete every single shift and every single night and make sure we’re ready to go,” the Nipawin bench boss said Wednesday morning.

Nipawin is winless against the Bombers this season including a 4-2 loss in their most recent game on Jan. 5. Flin Flon scored all four goals on the powerplay. Nipawin has only killed four of 10 penalties in a pair of games on the road to start the 2024 calendar year. The SJHL club still has the second ranked penalty killing group and second best ranking power-play, but those numbers aren’t leading to successive victories.

“We’re a high penalized team which obviously we’re not happy about, but we’ve been able to do the job. Maybe it’s catching up to us a little bit where we have to be more disciplined and stay out of the box,” Kozun said.

The Hawks have losses of 5-3, 3-2, and 4-2 against the Bombers this season. For the most part they have kept Flin Flon’s top scorers off the scoresheet outside Carter Anderson’s power-play hat-trick on Jan. 5. Kozun is confident his group can play with the nation’s top-ranked club.

“We have to go in with the same mindset of playing tight defensive hockey and keeping them to the outside and when they get an opportunity on the power-play we have got shut them down,” Kozun said.

Nipawin’s last win at the Whitney Forum was Feb. 15, 2022.

Faceoff is 7:30 p.m., the pregame show of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio starts at 7:15 p.m.
