Hawks suffer ninth straight loss to Bombers

The Nipawin Hawks found themselves coming home empty again after another trip to Flin Flon.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team lost 4-1 to the Bombers Wednesday, now the Hawks’ ninth straight setback against their Sherwood Division rivals. Nipawin beat Flin Flon in their first meeting last season, but haven’t picked up a point since. It’s also been nearly two years since Nipawin has collected a win at the Whitney Forum.

Head Coach Tad Kozun joined the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio and praised the top-ranked Bombers group, but he said his team can play with anyone in the SJHL.

“We’re not worried about the speed of the game at all with the group we’ve got and the way we want to play,” he said. “It comes down to little details and guys making sure they do things right all the time. You can’t cheat the game and when your focus and preparation doesn’t focus on details then obviously you will be on the wrong end of the score like we were tonight,” he said.

Flin Flon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period with the Bombers adding two more in the second, before Braeden Jockims broke the shutout bid of Kenneth Marquart in the third courtesy of his ninth of the season. The Bombers capped the scoring with a late power-play marker for their fourth win over the Hawks this season.

Netminder Damon Cunningham was brilliant in the Hawks’ net making 42 stops in the loss. Kozun was quick to credit his goalie for his performance and said game results can’t come down to the 19-year-old Edmonton product’s performance.

“He does it night in and night out for us,” Kozun said. “That’s why we think he is the best in the league this year. It would be nice to get him some help on the other end.”

With the loss, Nipawin has only won two of five games to start the 2024 calendar year. The team has also slipped to seventh in the SJHL standings after sitting in fifth for most of the season.

The Melville Millionaires have taken over fifth place in the playoff race thanks to a four-game winning streak that included a win over the Hawks on Jan. 14. Just two points separate the Millionaires and ninth-place Weyburn Red Wings in the standings with the Hawks tangled in the middle.

Friday’s home-ice matchup against Melville could arguably be the biggest game of the season, but Kozun feels the same about the remaining 19 games.

“I think every game is big for us now. We can’t look past anything right now. From our standpoint, we have to be ready to go every single day and we can’t take any days off,” he said.

Faceoff at the ‘Cage’ is at 7 p.m.
