Sask Sport has released the finalists for the 2023 Saskatchewan Sport Awards, as Olympians and Paralympians, international and national champions, and coaches and volunteers will all be honoured.

One of the finalists is from the northeast, as Humboldt native Paige Crozon is one of three nominees for the Female Athlete of the Year.

“I was quite shocked when I found out that I’ve been nominated and selected as one of the finalists for the Sask Female Athlete of the Year. I was also really proud because I proudly represent Canada and Saskatchewan when I’m playing on the women’s professional circuit and on the international stage, so I’m very honoured as well,” she told northeastNOW.

The annual program celebrates the success and dedication of those in the province’s amateur sports community through two categories – excellence awards and recognition awards.

In Crozon’s case, she falls under the excellence awards category, which celebrates outstanding event performances or a series of performances by a Saskatchewan athlete, coach or team within a given calendar year.

“I play on the 3×3 national team and we’ve been in pursuit of Olympic qualification for 3×3 basketball for the first time ever for Canada. We’ve been on this journey since 2019 and these past two years we have been world champions,” Crozon added.

“Coming from Saskatchewan and growing up in Humboldt is a huge part of the reason why I’m able to and still continue to play on the international stage. I had access to dozens of sports growing up, and had so many supportive coaches, volunteers and family members who helped foster that love of the game within me.”

The 2023 Saskatchewan Sport Awards will be celebrated with a gala on Thursday, Feb. 1 in Regina.

The gala will honour the 12 Recognition Awards recipients, as well as announce the recipients of the six excellence awards and celebrate those named as finalists.

Crozon is planning to attend and is also excited to catch up with her mentor, who won the volunteer dedication award for his work in multi-sport.

“I work for the Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan and I am the manager of the Living Skies Indigenous Basketball League, and Mike Tanton was the one who brought me on to that project and has continued to be a mentor in my life,” she explained.

“He’s an amazing resource and support for me, so the gala will be amazing, and I’m really proud to be there to celebrate and support him, as well as all the other award winners and candidates.”

Crozon still lives part-time in Saskatchewan, as she splits time in Alberta as well to train with her 3×3 national squad.
