The Nipawin Hawks have added to their prospect pool on the blueline signing Logan Denton to a Letter of Intent for next year.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club announced the signing of the five feet, nine-inch-tall defenceman Tuesday afternoon during a six-day break on the ice. Associate General Dana Dirks said the St. Louis, Miss. product caught his eyes at the Circle K Classic in Calgary at Christmas of this year with the AAA Blues U18 team.

“Logan is a smart player, he skates well, moves pucks quickly, he doesn’t panic,” Dirks said. “He’s a little bit smaller in stature for a D-man but he thinks the game well.”

In 34 games this season with the U18 AAA Blues, the same program current Hawk defencemen Vito Biondo and Luke Chase played for, Denton has seven goals and 18 assists. The 17-year-old is also plus-19 on the season. Dirks said he provides a higher offensive ceiling than the current St. Louis players on their roster and could elevate to the power-play in the future.

“Some guys are moving on this year, and I definitely think Logan is a guy that could step up and help us on the power-play,” Dirks said.

Discussions between the Hawks and the Denton family began in December after the tournament in Calgary. Dirks added Denton has always hoped to continue his career north of the border.

“One of the benefits of having a kid like Logan is he’s always wanted to play junior hockey in Canada and we’re really happy to be the franchise he’s going to come play for,” Dirks said.

Nipawin will return to action Friday in La Ronge.
