Hawks shutout for second straight game

The Hawks offense has gone dry, and the losses are piling up after Saturday’s 5-0 loss to Melfort in Nipawin.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team was blanked on back-to-back nights this weekend after an 8-0 loss in Flin Flon Friday. Head Coach Tad Kozun spoke about the lack of production from his group after their seventh straight loss.

“You have to score at least to win a hockey game and right now we haven’t been able to score any,” he said. “When you are down 1-0 31 seconds into the game, just kind of the way it’s been going, you must find a way to battle back. Then it’s 2-0, and you’re playing catch up again.”

Nipawin’s last goal came at the 5:55 mark of the second period against the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Jan. 26. The Hawks’s last victory was on Jan. 6 at the Centennial Arena against the Ice Wolves. The Hawks were in fifth in the SJHL standings then and now find themselves in ninth. The Hawks are just five points out of the fifth spot. The rest of February features games against all the teams Nipawin is battling from fifth down to 10th in the postseason race. Despite the losing streak, Kozun said the team still controls where they will finish.

“The nice part about is, I know we aren’t winning right now, but we control the entire destiny of where we end up,” he said.

The schedule will resume Friday in Kindersley, and again on Saturday at the West Central Event Centre versus the Klippers. Just one point separates the clubs with 14 games remaining.

The Hawks will also host Melville, Kindersley, and Weyburn this month, plus they will head to Notre Dame, Weyburn, and Estevan in a couple of weeks to take on teams that are chasing the fifth to eighth playoff seeds.
