A northeast basketball player has been named the 2023 Sask Sport Female Athlete of the Year.

Humboldt native Paige Crozon was recently honoured at a gala in Regina, along with 19 other individuals.

Crozon told northeastNOW she was grateful to be recognized by her home province, alongside other great individuals.

“It was a huge honour to be selected as the 2023 Female Athlete of the Year in the province of Saskatchewan. There were so many amazing nominees this year and it was great to be in Regina for the ceremony. It’s a huge privilege and honour and I’m always proud to represent Saskatchewan when I’m travelling internationally playing on Team Canada,” she said.

“It was great to be back in Saskatchewan for the ceremony, Sask Sport did a beautiful job of putting on the awards banquet. I got to connect with so many people who are passionate about the sport in their province, so that was a huge benefit to be able to be there and receive the award and celebrate with all the other amazing award recipients.”

The 3×3 women’s basketball player attended seven international tournaments in 2023 and won the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series Final in Mongolia, thanks in large part to her buzzer-beating basket.

That marked back-to-back world championships for her and her squad, as they now pursue an Olympic berth in Paris, later this year.

Stops on the women’s circuit this past fall included one in Montreal, Quebec, and Edmonton, as Crozon and her group swept all three on their home turf.

“We had an amazing season for 3×3 and I’ve also invested a lot of time, dedication and energy into growing the sport for Canadian women. Now, to be able to be recognized for those efforts feels really rewarding and we hope to continue and build off the success that we had this season leading up into the Paris Olympic Games this summer,” Crozon added.

“I’m very proud to be from Saskatchewan and I think that I’m in the position that I am today because of all the opportunities that I had growing up in Humboldt and the amazing support that I’ve had from my parents, family and coaches. I don’t think I’d be in this position if I hadn’t grown up in Humboldt, so I like to give credit where credit is due.”
