Art gallery showcases Indigenous work by Northlands College students and staff

The public is invited to an art reception on Tuesday for an exhibit featuring the work of Northlands College students and staff.

The exhibit is entitled Indigenous Reflections and it’s a collection of work showcasing a variety of mediums. Several months ago, the college through its Indigenous Initiatives department put a call out for art. Students and staff then submitted on a voluntary basis or incorporated into their class work.

“This is, for us, an opportunity to highlight the incredible talent that is in the North, and at the same time, an opportunity to provide a venue for folks to express themselves, which is really important,” said Northlands President and CEO Karsten Henriksen.

“It’s a collection of works by the greater college community. There are learners, staff and faculty that have all contributed to help share their stories, culture and their lived experiences in the North, which is really cool.”

Henriksen explained the creative arts industry is not only a key component to the economy in northern Saskatchewan, but northern Canada as well. He said some of the work on display is inspiring and shows a variety of different topics and subject matter.

Henriksen noted sharing such artwork is important to the communities that Northlands College serves.

“I look at, for example, our cultural centre in Creighton, which is home to art from across northern Saskatchewan and is not only used by the college, but by the community and the K-12 system,” he said.

A reception will be held at La Ronge’s Mistasinihk Place this evening at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend, and students, faculty and members of the arts community will be available to discuss their work as well.

The exhibit will remain on display throughout the month of February.
