Hawks host Millionaires in another gigantic game

Wednesday’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) schedule features another massive showdown for the Hawks as Nipawin plays host to Melville.

The Hawks snapped an eight-game losing streak Saturday in Kindersley on the strength of penalty killing and an overtime tally from Alex Bernauer. Nipawin was forced to kill nine power-plays plus a trio of lengthy five-on-three chances. Head Coach Tad Kozun was proud of his clubs’ resiliency.

“They get one goal out of that, you have to sit there and be really happy with that,” Kozun said Wednesday morning. “We expect to score every time we get a five-on-three, I know it hasn’t worked out lately either, but I thought our penalty killing did a great job.”

Nipawin was awarded just three power-plays of 12 in the game at the West Central Events Centre. Tyson Endall was the winning netminder making 29 stops in the Hawks’ goal. The work earned the 18-year-old SJHL Rookie of the Week honours. Kozun said the entire team from Endall out battled to collect the crucial two points.

“That was a character win, we did everything we could to win that hockey game, now we just have to build off it,” Kozun added.

Fighting for the team’s playoff lives, Nipawin has slipped to 10th overall in the SJHL standings after both SJHL games Tuesday went to overtime. The Hawks are tied for ninth with the Yorkton Terriers with a game in hand. Weyburn holds down the final spot as of Wednesday afternoon, a point up on both Nipawin and Yorkton. The Millionaires occupy seventh, five points ahead of Nipawin. Kozun didn’t need to emphasize the importance of the meeting with Melville.

“Obviously the guys are feeling much better coming off a win, but we still need to make sure we put the work in to get where we want to go,” he said.

Faceoff is 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena, adult admission is two-for-one to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m.
