Nipawin to host governance workshop after municipal election

Feb 15, 2024 | 5:19 PM

The town of Nipawin will be hosting a post-election governance workshop this fall.

Council approved the workshop at the meeting this week.

Nipawin’s Chief Administrative Officer Michele Sorensen told northeastNOW the purpose of the workshop is to provide new council members and administration with “clarification and reinforcement of council’s roles, administration’s roles, our roles working together, and…effective and good governance.”

Sorensen said it’s crucial that administrative staff and council members learn the ins-and-outs of municipal governance.

“New council members have maybe never been involved with a municipality or with a board or those kinds of organizations,” Sorensen explained. “Having clearly defined roles makes things work a lot easier and more effectively.”

The governance workshop will be facilitated by George Cuff, who hosts many seminars of this nature where he clearly outlines the roles played by both council and staff.

“He will work with administration separately, he works with everybody together, and he’s very clear and concise,” said Sorensen.

The town of Nipawin hosted Guff in 2016 for a governance workshop seminar that was attended by elected officials and administrative staff from a number of other municipalities. Sorensen said Nipawin will once again extend an invitation to regional municipalities and others.

Council approved the workshop for a cost up to $12,500 plus facilitator travel expenses and housing costs. Funds for the workshop will be included in the 2024 municipal budget.

The municipal election will take place across the province Nov. 13.
