While the Nipawin Hawks prepare for a potential season saving road trip down south starting Thursday, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club is building for the future.

The team announced the signing of Calgary, Alta. product Jack Drake for next season on Tuesday. Nipawin Associate General Manager Dana Dirks first saw the 17-year-old play at an under-18 showcase in Edmonton, Alta. earlier this season and is excited to have the 6-2 tall forward committed to the Hawks.

“Can play in the middle, can play on the wing, basically a point a game guy, been very good lately. He plays the power-play, kills penalties, another character kid that comes highly recommended,” Dirks said.

Drake has 14 goals and 15 assists in 35 games this season with the Airdrie CFR Bisons U18 team in the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL). Last season he scored 10 goals and added eight assists in 36 games played.

The Hawks are expected to have seven forwards move on after this year. The team has signed Saskatchewan products Jack Janzen and Van Taylor, plus Drake’s teammate Adrien Fox has also signed a Letter of Intent with the team. Dirks said he’s pleased with the group of prospects up front.

“So far we’re pretty happy with where things are at with our recruiting for next year,” Dirks said. “We’re thinking we have a nice mix of some guys with skill, some size, and obviously the leadership aspect we’ve focused on. All these guys have a high compete level.”

The Hawks are in Notre Dame on Thursday to begin the three game trip that includes stops in Estevan on Friday and Weyburn on Saturday.

All three games will be on 750 Beach Radio starting 15 minutes ahead of faceoff.
