Hawks host Terriers in first of back-to-back games with playoffs on the line

The Nipawin Hawks still have a chance at the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) playoffs, but they need some help, and need to win games.

The Hawks had a glorious opportunity in their last two games against Weyburn to climb back into the top eight seeds but lost both games to the Red Wings and now sit five points back of Weyburn for the final spot. On Friday Yorkton will travel to Nipawin with ninth place on the line, plus the teams will be scoreboard watching in La Ronge as the Ice Wolves host the Red Wings.

Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team has been competing hard and lost a few tough games lately but says his group will continue to track down a playoff position.

“We know the task at hand, we’ve got to win games and it’s got to start tonight,” Kozun said game day morning. “We’ve got to get refocused, obviously a heartbreaker Wednesday in overtime, but we have to get right back into it.”

The Terriers and Hawks have played three times this year, Yorkton has won two of the games. The clubs will also compete on Tuesday back in Yorkton to conclude the season series. Kozun said the final six games will determine the future for some of his players, that includes graduating 20-year-olds whether it’s a spot on a college roster, or the Hawks if the team makes the postseason.

“I know we’re not going to quit. It’s up to each individual guy of what type of effort they want to put in. It comes down are you a guy that’s going to roll over and quit on everybody or are you a guy that’s going to work even harder to make sure you have a job for next year or the playoffs if we get there,” he said.

Friday’s game will begin at 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
