Tie vote ends review of cannabis sale hours in P.A.

May 14, 2024 | 6:02 AM

It was close – but no cigar – for Prince Albert city councillor Terra Lennox-Zepp’s attempt to have a review done of the hours cannabis stores can be open in Prince Albert.

Lennox-Zepp brought forward the idea after council decided to change the hours liquor stores could be open.

“What is the magic number for cannabis retail hours? Does it make sense right now that you can buy alcohol longer hours than you can buy cannabis?” she said.

Several weeks ago, council voted to reduce the times that liquor stores can be open after having a detailed study into the subject and at the request of a local committee dedicated to reducing the harms caused by alcohol.

Lennox-Zepp said that when Prince Albert first gave out retail cannabis permits, the province limited their control but now that they can change things around, it’s time for a review.

Mayor Greg Dionne said that he was not supportive because the request for the change was not coming from cannabis retailers and that since they hadn’t complained, they were happy with the current hours.

Along with Dionne, Councillors Blake Edwards, Darren Solomon and Don Cody all voted against the review. Councillors Dawn Kilmer, Tony Head, Charlene Miller and Lennox-Zepp were in favour.

Councillor Dennis Ogrodnick was absent from the meeting.
