Melfort Kinettes receive award for Ladies Funspiel event

The Melfort Kinettes have been rewarded for their creativity and giving spirit.

They received the 2024 Outstanding Club Award this past weekend at the Kinsmen District Convention for their Ladies Funspiel curling event.

Melfort Kinettes co-chair Angie Rolheiser told northeastNOW the award criteria are for a club that has a creative Telemiracle fundraiser.

“They gave that (award) to us for the fourth annual ladies funsipel that had the theme of ‘Come on Barbie, Let’s Go Curling,’” explained Rolheiser.

The Melfort Kinettes have had themes for all four funspiels and Rolheiser said the number of people with costumes to suit the themes has grown each year. She added the event isn’t so much about curling but having fun, seeing the costumes, and raising money for a great cause.

The Melfort Kinsmen held their final meeting before the summer this week, and the mood was great after they received provincial recognition.

“Everybody was just so excited, there was a different energy at the meeting than usual,” said Rolheiser. “Personally, being able to see an event that I’ve co-chaired over the last four years bring home a nice little trophy like that was pretty special.”

Fellow co-chair Shannon Marshall told northeastNOW it’s one of the Kinettes’ favourite events.

“The way the community rallies around the event is just incredible and the rink has been nothing but accommodating and amazing,” said Marshall.

Both thanked the volunteers that have helped make the funspiel a success, the sponsors, and the Melfort Curling Club for giving them a chance and a place to host.

“They just embraced it wholeheartedly and have been so supportive over the last few years to make it happen, they donate the curling ice to us because it’s for Telemiracle,” said Rolheiser. “That’s one of the big things that we do here in Saskatchewan as Kin Clubs and just as people and communities, and that’s raising the money for Telemiracle.”
