Fire ban in effect for tri-communities

Jul 10, 2024 | 4:17 PM

A fire ban is in effect as of noon on Wednesday.

That’s according to a notice issued by the La Ronge Regional Fire Department, which states the fire ban will remain in place until significant precipitation. The fire ban includes all open fires, but exceptions are being made for smokers, propane barbecues, propane-fueled fire pits, and briquettes which are all still permitted.

The fire ban is in effect for Air Ronge, La Ronge and Lac La Ronge Indian Band 156 and 156B reserves. Violators of the ban will be invoiced at response rates set at a $1,300 minimum.

All active burn permits have been suspended immediately until the ban is rescinded.

“This ban has been issued to ensure the risk of wildfire within the tri-communities is eliminated as much as possible,” the notice adds.

“This is due to extreme heat, extreme fire index ratings, and no significant precipitation forecasted in the near future. An ember from your open fire can easily catch nearby bushes/trees on fire and can quickly overwhelm the fire department’s resources.”

As of 3 p.m., Environment Canada has forecasted the temperature in La Ronge to be 34 C with a humidex of 37 C.

As of July 10, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is reporting 70 active fires in the province with 19 uncontained. There have been 295 fires in Saskatchewan so far this year with the five-year average being 205.
