Best of the best: National Judges evaluate Melfort

Jul 27, 2024 | 10:30 AM

National judges were in Melfort on Friday as part of the city’s Communities in Bloom evaluation.

Melfort is competing for the first time in two years, when they won a national championship in the up to 6,000 category.

Now, they are competing in what’s called the class of champions as they face off against other previous winners.

“This is definitely the next step, to compete against other communities that are placing the same sort of effort within their community and have built that community pride,” explained national judge Mohammad Asadian.

“From the moment we got here, we’ve seen that Melfort definitely has a very good Communities in Bloom committee with very passionate volunteers. You can definitely see the community pride in the work and amount of effort that they’ve placed within the community.”

Asadian, along with his co-judge Larry Hall, has already been to two different communities in New Brunswick, along with one in both Alberta and Manitoba.

Melfort is their last stop as they’re shown the highlights of the city and then complete a report on things they’ve liked, along with things they would change or make a little bit better to improve the quality of life within the community.

“Things going on here certainly indicate that they belong in this competition, there’s lots of good things happening here. Certainly, just being in this contest is a feather in your cap, as we are looking at the best of the best communities. Just to get into this category is something to be proud of and indicates the quality of work that’s going on within your municipality,” Hall added.

“I think of this as more of a showcase, rather than a competition, where you can highlight your community and the hard work that’s being put into the amazing initiatives that are taking place. It’s also building great places together by learning from other communities and putting those lessons towards your own,” concluded Asadian.

The results of this year’s Communities in Bloom categories won’t be announced until later in the fall. The winner of the Class of Champions category will get the opportunity, if they so choose, to later compete at an international level.
