Northlands to open learning centre in Fond du Lac

Northlands College will open a learning centre this fall on the Fond du Lac Denesuline First Nation.

“We have approximately 20 students already registered for this fall and we were actually up in the community celebrating Treaty Days with the premier and a minister last week and, in the morning, we had 11 additional applications within the first half hour of having our booth set up,” said Northlands President and CEO Karsten Henriksen.

“We’ll have students registering in essential skills, as well adult basic education and some university courses as well.”

The partnership is meant to mark a pivotal moment in Northlands College’s ongoing commitment to providing accessible and quality education tailored to the unique needs of northern residents and communities.

The learning centre will also offer classes for bachelor degrees in arts, social work and education, diplomas in liberal arts and administration, masters programs in business administration, as well as flexible learning options. By offering these programs locally, the partnership will help reduce barriers to higher education, ensuring that residents of Fond du Lac and surrounding communities have the resources and support needed to achieve their academic and professional goals.

“We have a current have staff member already living in the community who is part of the community, and we will be advertising for several positions in that community,” Henriksen explained.

“In addition to that, we will have remote distance delivery as well. Northern Saskatchewan is a huge geographic footprint for us to serve and we do so by leveraging technology, as well as bodies in the classroom.”

The provincial government is investing $310,000 through Northlands College’s 2024-25 operating and program grants as part of the province’s commitment to furthering economic growth and Indigenous education in the North.

“We are proud to support initiatives that inspire people and create more opportunities to learn closer to home,” said Advanced Education Minister Colleen Young in a media release.

“Partnerships like this, combined with sustainable funding and programs for those who wish to pursue post-secondary education across all areas of the province, are essential to the continued growth and strength of our province.”
