P.A. and area MLA candidate forum cancelled over lack of participation

No all-candidate forum for those running for MLA in Prince Albert and the two surrounding ridings will happen before the upcoming election.

Chamber of Commerce Manager Patty Hughes said she did not receive confirmation from enough candidates to go ahead.

“It’s quite disappointing. We had to make this decision as there is a lot of prep work done to make sure this happens,” she said.

Hughes said that she is disappointed the forum will not go ahead. Having the Chamber host is a good way to give the candidates a neutral space to share their party platform.

“It was a difficult decision for us but we just felt with the few candidates participating that the value for the people who would have been attending would have been disappointing for them,” she said.

They had confirmations from only three candidates.

The provincial election is October 28. In addition to the Saskatchewan Party and the NDP, the Saskatchewan Green Party will run a candidate in every riding for the fourth consecutive time.

The Green Party candidate for Prince Albert — Northcote is Jarren Jones taking on incumbent Alana Ross (SP) and Nicole Rancourt (NDP).

In Prince Albert Carlton, Andrew Muirhead for the Greens will run against Carolyn Brost-Strom (NDP) and Kevin Kasun (SP).

The chamber still plans to go ahead with two other planned forums for those running for city council and those running for mayor.

Dates have been set for October 30 for candidates and November 1 for mayor.

Hughes said that how the forums run may change depending on the number of candidates after Wednesday, which is the nomination deadline.

As of October 7, Greg Dionne and Bill Powalinsky have both submitted papers in the bid for mayor.

Ward 1 has one candidate, Daniel Brown, Tony Head is the lone candidate so far in Ward 3, as are Bryce Laewetz in Ward 4, Blake Edwards in Ward 6 and Darren Solomon in Ward 8.

There will be a race in Ward 2 between Meghan Mayer and Troy Parenteau, in Ward 5 between Stephen Ring and Shaun Harris and in Ward 7 between Dawn Kilmer and Dennis Nowoselsky.

Names in the hat for school boards inside Prince Albert include Alex Crawley, Michael Durmuth, Kurtis Hamel, Arne Lindberg, Alan Nunn, Darcy Sander, Mira Lewis, Shayne Morley and Cherie Rustulka in the Saskatchewan Rivers division.

For the Prince Albert Catholic Division, so far the candidate list includes Suzanne Stubbs, Darryl Sande, Andrea Ring, Patrick Hordyski and Crystal Halliday.
