Nominations close quickly for Horizon SD board elections

Much attention has been given to the provincial and municipal elections, but there’s another vote on the horizon.

School board elections are taking place Nov. 13, the day of the municipal election.

Kevin Garinger is the director of education for the Horizon School Division, serving areas including Humboldt, Lanigan, and Kelvington.

He told northeastNOW that running to become a school board trustee is a way to help guide the strategic direction of the division.

“They can influence…various key decisions on policy, on budgeting, on student outcomes that way,” Garinger explained. “The board also establishes the goals of the organization.”

Garinger said his work is then to support the strategic direction and ensure the division is trying to meet those goals in the most effective way possible.

Board members also represent community interests, according to Garinger, bringing local context to help shape the future of education both for their communities and the division as a whole. He said board members are also highly involved with school community councils (SCCs), helping to support their work.

Garinger said it’s important that residents vote to help determine what the new board looks like going forward.

“These people are leaders in our communities and in our province in a lot of ways, certainly within our school division, so citizens are able to choose those leaders who are going to help shape the future of schools and uphold…the values that are important to the community.”

Nomination forms for the Horizon School Division board election are available here. Garinger said the packages have plenty of information for residents thinking of throwing their hat into the ring. Nomination packages are available at schools, but they cannot be returned to schools, only through the division office. Forms are to be submitted to the division office in person, by email, or by fax no later than 4 p.m. Oct. 9.

Garinger said anyone with questions about the nomination process can contact the division by email or call 306-272-7953.
