NBCHS Vikings hope for finals run with playoffs just around the corner

After winning the North Saskatchewan 5A Football League last season, the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings are looking forward to the playoffs as they play their final game of the regular season tomorrow against Martensville.

The Vikings are currently tied for 2nd place in the league with Martensville and hold a 2-1 record. The winner of tomorrow’s game will get home field advantage for the league semi-final, where Martensville and NBCHS will play each other again. The winner of the semi-final will go on to play in the finals against the winner between PA Carlton and the #4 ranked team, with the assumption that it will be PA Carlton.

Head Coach of Vikings, Shaun Webster is expecting a good match-up against Martensville but is also confident in his team.

“We play Martensville this week and we match up quite well. We are a physical team where Martinville is more of a skill-based team. But with everything kind of coming together as a team, we are fixing all the little things that we need to fix and we’ve never lost to Martensville before, so we are hoping to do well when we face them.”

The only game that the Vikings have lost so far in their league this season was against PA Carlton earlier on in the year, when they lost 38-33.

Being the defending champions, NBCHS hopes to get a chance at redemption and play PA Carlton again in the finals, Webster says.

“We are hoping to do quite well in the playoffs so we can advance and play PA Carlton in the finals. They are the top team in the league and when we played them in the second game of the season we struggled a little bit, but we’ve been getting better each week and we’ve been improving and working on everything.”

Over the past decade, The Vikings have been a strong football program in Northern Saskatchewan, and Webster, who has been a part of the program since 2012, says it’s their physical and hard play style that has been the backbone of the program.

“We are more physical than other teams and we do have a focus point on being physical, where some teams are more maybe just on skill stuff and motion in the background and stuff like that, but we’ve always been physical because, it’s always kind of been our tradition…Practicing hard, playing hard and just working on the fundamentals.”

The Vikings take on Martensville tomorrow, 6:30 p.m. at the Beaver Lions Stadium.
