Vikings lose to Martensville in semifinal

Oct 29, 2024 | 12:13 PM

It was a tough game for the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings football team as their season came to an end after losing 28-7 to Martensville in the league semifinal on Friday, Oct. 18.

Head Coach of the NBCHS Football team, Shaun Webster said the team came out to a great start but lost momentum as the game went on.

“Our first drive looked really good, and we did everything just like we practiced hard on and it worked out big for us at the start of the game. We played good in the beginning but the turning point in the game for us was when we were third and like half a yard to go to get in the endzone and we couldn’t score, and the other team basically marched it 99 yards the other way and got a touchdown.”

The Vikings finished 2-2 on the regular season for their league, getting wins over PA St. Mary and Lloydminster Comp., while having a close game against Martensville the week prior to the playoff and also against number one team, PA Carlton, earlier on in the season.

Even though the result wasn’t in their favour, Webster said he is very proud of the team and how far they’ve come this season.

‘Overall, I’m proud of how hard they played and how much effort everyone put in it. We grew so much as a team together and got better, so it just kind of sucks the way we lost because I know we were the much better team.”

With the season now over, Webster added that he is already looking forward to the next season.

“This was my first year coaching the head coach and there’s a lot of things that I learned and I really enjoyed coaching the team and it was an awesome experience, so I am already looking forward to next year, just working on things that we need to get better as a team. I am just really eager to get back to it.”

Spring camp for the team will start sometime in June of 2025 but the date is not yet determined.
