Melfort council candidate Doug Terry hopes experience is a benefit to his campaign

A long-time Melfort resident and council veteran is looking for another stint in chambers.

Incumbent councillor Doug Terry told northeastNOW he moved to Melfort over 50 years ago and had no intention to stay but has since built a life in the city.

He believes his experience would be a benefit to the next elected council.

“I’ve served on council for over 23 years in several capacities, including Mayor,” said Terry.

He said there are several big projects on the go in Melfort, including a multimillion-dollar landfill decommissioning. Significant infrastructure replacements are needed in the city, according to Terry.

“We’ve got to replace our aging water reservoirs, we have to rejuvenate the (Northern Lights) Palace, these are all things on our radar.”

Sewer and water system and road improvements are also major ongoing infrastructure needs in the city, said Terry.

“I would like to see growth in our city, of course, in all avenues – the residential and business to increase our tax base. That will allow us (to have) future expansion in our facilities and services.”

Terry added there also needs to be an effort to combat crime in Melfort. Another priority for Terry is having strong services while keeping taxes down.

The long-time council member said anyone interested in learning more about the process of municipal government can go to council meetings or visit the city’s website to read the agendas and minutes.

“We welcome input and participation in all areas,” Terry said.

While there are times council doesn’t agree, Terry said everyone that puts their name forward has the best interest of the city in mind.

Terry is concerned that there aren’t enough residential properties available in the city for any future business expansion. He said council has been lobbying the Federal Government for grants in an effort to address the issue.

Terry, who retired after years with the health region, said he’s available to talk about any city matters, and added that often people talk to him on the street about concerns or questions they may have.

Nine candidates are running for the six councillor positions in Melfort. Incumbent mayor Glenn George was elected by acclamation.
