David George seeking another term on Battleford council

After serving over 20 years on Town of Battleford council, David George still has work he wants to do.

“I am passionate about this,” he said.

During the run of the campaign season, George said as he was walking around the community, handing out fliers and speaking to residents, similar concerns cropped up.

“Taxation is always the big one,” he said.

“We have people with restricted incomes and things like that, so I mean that’s always very important and its important period.”

One of the questions posed by the long-term councillor was whether they are spending money wisely and what can be done in the future, noting they need to look at what is available to Battleford.

“We have to be open arms about that and hopefully we can draw some new businesses and maintain our community as best we can,” he said, referring to policing and infrastructure.

While George has served for two decades, there have been times over the years when he has stepped in and out of the council chambers. By seeking another term, he sees there is more work to be done.

“I enjoy it, there’s lots of things you can get done as part of a group,” he said, adding that as with any group, disagreements are had and that’s not a bad thing.

“It’s exhilarating and I enjoy it.”

George noted the community is mainly a bedroom community and while it has business, the focus has been on keeping the town safe.

“We’re trying to minimalize it the best we can as council and hopefully everything works out that way,” George said of the increase in crime rates.

One of the areas he could see expansion in is with regard to the fire hall – either through a renovation or a new building.

“With that was talks about potentially having an RCMP office in that building, which would be absolutely wonderful, so if we could do that, that would be a great thing.”

“Especially when regional care and those kind of things are also up in [the] not to distant future, we’re thinking, we’re going to need lots of money, so we have to be careful with our taxation and everything else to make it viable.”

Ultimately, George said the role of the council is to ensure that the money is spent wisely along with maintaining infrastructure, recreational facilities and support services.

“We have to make sure our constituents, the people in our community are happy with our responsiblities.”
