Early deficit hurts Melfort Mustangs in loss to Flin Flon

Nov 9, 2024 | 11:49 AM

A slow start for the Melfort Mustangs sealed their fate in a 6-2 loss in Flin Flon Friday night.

The Mustangs had been idle since Oct. 30 and struggled to get in rhythm early in Friday night’s game.

The Bombers stormed out to a 2-0 lead after one period and added a pair of goals early in the second to put the Mustangs in a 4-0 hole.

Reilly Kotai scored with just under eight minutes remaining in the second to cut the deficit to three but Flin Flon scored twice more in the second frame to make it 6-1, including a goal by Ryder Ringor with 32 seconds left in the second.

Ryder’s brother Rylan scored his first as a Mustang to close out the scoring.

Kristian Coombs was pulled after Flin Flon’s fourth goal, and he had 10 saves in 14 shots. Backup Madison Mulawka made 10 stops on 12 shots.

The Mustangs fall to 11-4 on the season, and they will look to bounce back Wednesday as they host Estevan at the Northern Lights Palace.

Former Melfort coach Kevin Dickie will be honoured at the game.
