What to know ahead of Wednesday’s municipal election in Melfort

Voters will go to the polls on Wednesday for municipal elections across the province.

Polls in Melfort will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

Residents will elect six councillors from the nine candidates in this year’s election. School board elections will also take place, with two candidates vying for one position from the Melfort subdivision.

All eligible voters are encouraged to cast their ballots.

“Unlike the provincial election, we don’t have a voters’ registry,” said Steffen. “Voters are required to bring voter identification.”

Acceptable photo ID can be a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license. Steffen said any driver’s license must include a civic address, not a post office box number.

“If your driver’s license does not include your civic address, you are required to bring additional identification that shows your address.”

Steffen said 250 people cast their votes in the advance polls. That number is lower than the 446 that did so in 2020.

She said 2020 saw many people cast mail-in ballots, and vote in advance, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that could be a reason for a drop in advance votes cast in 2024.

Another reason could be that there is no mayoral race in Melfort this election, said Steffen. Incumbent Glenn George was re-elected by acclamation.
