Big performance from Maric ends Red Wings win streak

The Battlefords North Stars got back in the win column last night as they beat the Weyburn Red Wings 4-3 to give them their first regulation loss in 14 games and end their six-game win streak.

The North Stars opened up the scoring just past the midway point in the first period with a goal from Anthony Campbell. Weyburn was able to answer back after Liam Fitzgerald was tripped on a breakaway, giving him a penalty shot which he scored on to tie the game, 1-1.

In the second period, the North Stars struck first again with a goal from Jace Rask on a rebound to retake the lead. However, after a cross-checking penalty, the Red Wings were on the powerplay and found the back of the net with a goal from Chad Lebeau to make it even.

Battlefords continued to put on the pressure though and eventually struck the nylon again, this time on the powerplay from Gavin Granger to go up 3-2 going into the final period.

For the third, the North Stars came out with fire behind them and after tons of good opportunities, Jordan Grill lit the lamp for Battlefords to double the lead.

The Red Wings did try to rally back as they scored one more goal with the net pulled and an extra attacker, but it wasn’t enough as the North Stars ran the time out and won the game 4-3.

The North got outshot by the Red Wings 44-38, went 1/2 on the powerplay and stopped Weyburn two out of three times on the penalty kill.

The star of the night for Battlefords was goaltender Justen Maric who stopped 41/44 shots, made multiple big save throughout the night and didn’t allow a single five on five goal.

The North Stars take on the Red Wings again tonight at Crescent Point Place with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
