Winter Storm Warning issued for northeast as heavy snow, strong wind expected

The mild fall in the northeast is expected to change in a big way over the next two days.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the northeast, including Melfort, Tisdale, and Nipawin, with 20 to 30 cm of snow expected. The wind is expected to be strong as well, with gusts up to 70 km/h at times.

Warning Preparedness Meteorologist for Environment and Climate Change Canada Danielle Desjardins told northeastNOW the system is tracking north-to-south from the United States.

“On the other side of this low-pressure system we’ve got some cold air coming down from the Arctic, on the western side,” said Desjardins. “In the middle of that, we’re going to see a lot of snow, some strong winds.”

Desjardins said there will be some mixed precipitation before the major snowfall, which could leave roads and highways very icy. Desjardins said the rain or freezing rain will be covered by snow, making driving even more challenging. The heavy snow and strong wind will also likely lead to visibility issues for motorists in the areas most affected by the system.

A snowfall warning has been issued for areas a little further north, including Creighton. A large chunk of eastern Saskatchewan is under a winter storm watch. Desjardins said that could be upgraded to a warning depending on the track of the weather system, which is expected to stick around through Tuesday.

Temperatures will settle into more seasonal conditions. The regular high temperature for this time of year is –6 C. Highs are expected to be between –8 C and –10 C from Wednesday through Saturday.
