Following the first snowfall on Thursday, the North Battleford Fire Department is reminding residents to stay off the North Saskatchewan River as ice begins to form.

“It is dangerous, particularly at this time of year, when ice initially freezing stage. It is far too thin to sustain the weight of a person,” said Chief Lindsay Holm of NBFD.

Holm also stressed the importance of not overlooking smaller bodies of water, such as sloughs, and recommended that people check the Water Security Agency’s ice thickness guidance before attempting to cross any ice-covered water.

“Our Department gets frequent calls every year about people venturing onto the ice forming along the river,” Holm noted.
