The Battlefords North Stars were able to get back in the win column last night as they beat the Nipawin Hawks in a shootout at the Centennial Arena in Nipawin.

Despite coming out to a strong start, the North Stars found themselves trailing 1-0 early after the Hawks got the first goal of the game.

That didn’t last long though as nearing the end of the first, the North Stars got back-to-back goals coming from Elijah Anderson and Colton Getzlaff to take a 2-1 lead.

In the second period, it was all North Stars as they started to find their groove, getting lots of good looks on net and controlling most of the puck possession.

This resulted in another goal for the North Stars, this time from Nikita Ivashchenko, his eighth of the season, to go up 3-1 and end the period.

For the third period, Battlefords came out strong and looked like they were going to start pulling away but the Hawks didn’t let off.

As the period went on, the Hawks started to put on some pressure and eventually found a goal to close the gap, making it 3-2.

Then in the last 10 second of the third, the Hawks pulled their net-minder for an extra attacker and ended up scoring to tie the game 3-3 and force overtime.

In overtime, both teams found good quality chances and had some rushes but neither were able to strike the nylon, so the game called for a shootout.

After the first three shooters from both teams failed to find the back of the net, the Hawks brought out their fourth shooter and he missed as well.

This left it all on the stick of North Stars Braden Nienaber and he was able to get the job done, scoring on a nice wrist shot to win the game 4-3.

Battlefords tied Nipawin in shots with 33, went 0/1 on the powerplay and stopped the Hawks all five times on the penalty kill.

Connor Baumbach had a big game in his fourth start of the season, stopping 30/33 shots and making some huge saves in the process.

The North Stars improve to 12-6-3-1 on the season with 28 points and now sit at 2nd overall in the league.

The North Stars get back in action this Friday as they head to the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort to take on the Melfort Mustangs with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
