It’s another win for all the shelter puppies and kitties this winter.

North Battleford Community Safety Officers, along with Battlefords Citizens on Patrol and Battlefords North Star, partnered last Friday to raise over $3,000 and various supplies for the Battlefords Humane Society through the 2024 Pack the Patrol Unit event.

“We got about six months’ worth of supply. It was a great day,” said Laurel Fauth, the society’s treasurer.

“It is a successful event every year, and they’ve been a very big support to us.”

The event was held at four locations across the city, including Canadian Tire, No Frills, Walmart, and PetValu. Volunteers from the four groups were on hand at each site to encourage and gather donations from the community.

“Each of those locations sells pet supplies, and so it makes it very, very easy for customers at any of those four locations to either provide physical products such as food or other pet supplies or a cash donation,” Doug Fher, COPP chairman, explained.

He mentioned COPP decided to step into this fundraiser because they believe ‘pets are important.’

“Pets provide a lot of benefits,” he said, “If I can put it this way, for each of us human beings, it’s important to look after those creatures.”

As this event has been ongoing for a few years, North Star players joined in this year to help.

With the assistance of CSOs, during the intermission of the Friday night mashup against Weyburn, $310 worth of pucks were sold through the “Puck Toss” session, with the proceeds split between COPP, the Humane Society, and the North Stars.

The Humane Society also brought out its animals in the games and the four locations to showcase their cuteness, which Fauth believes was a good opportunity to encourage people to adopt.

“Seeing them and raising awareness of who we have there. They’re good animals,” she noted.

With the exposure boost, four dogs found loving homes the past weekend, she added.

As the Humane Society still needs financial support for its new shelter building, she hopes the community will continue to show its kindness and help provide a better place for animals to find a warm and safe haven to call home during the biting cold.

“We’re still short on funding, so further donations are much needed and appreciated,” she said.
