Melfort RCMP Staff Sergeant and Detachment Commander, Ryan Case was honoured in Regina this past week.

Case was presented with the King Charles III’s Coronation Medal as recognition for his significant contribution to his region and community.

“I was lucky enough to be nominated for one, and I have no idea who nominated me because it’s anonymous, but I received notice a couple of months ago that I was being awarded and then I got it on Tuesday,” Case told northeastNOW.

“Certainly we don’t do this job to be awarded medals or awards or anything like that, but it is nice that somebody has thought high enough about what you end up doing on the job, in the community, and essentially service to your country, where they feel that you need to be recognized in that matter. It’s nice and very much appreciated.”

Thirty-thousand medals were awarded across the country, 4,000 of which recognized members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Thirteen hundred of the 30,000 medals were allocated to the RCMP, 80 of which were in Saskatchewan.

“The criteria was a little bit somewhat broad, but really in layman’s terms, it’s recognition for your service to your country, to the community, and for the job that we ultimately do. That’s why the issue at least a certain amount of the medals to the RCMP and to the policing world,” added Case.

“It’s open to anybody within the country to be nominated and receive one for whatever their involvement is in having a positive impact on the communities and the country that they live in. It’s not simply allocated for anybody in a community service type position, it can be anybody that has any type of role, so many civilians across our country will receive this one as well.”

Other people familiar with the Melfort area to receive a medal the same day as Case were Constable Victoria Nicholls of the Melfort Traffic Unit and retired Staff Sergeant Darren Simons.

“It was good to see a lot of people that you have been around and have worked with over the years,” Case concluded.

“The lieutenant governor, Russ Murasty handed the awards out to everybody, and he always brings up the fact that he likes doing these ones, especially for the RCMP, because of his service with the department. He was our commanding officer for the division years ago, so he says it means a little bit more as well.”
