A local tea and herbs business donated around $4,700 worth of food and a $1,000 cheque to the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre(BDFRC) on Thursday to bring warmth and support to the community during the biting cold.

“These are streets where I grew up, and I see people lined up out here. I see people on the streets at night. And I always think that could be me or somebody from my family…how can I help?” said Nikki Standinghorn, owner of NeepSee Herbs Teas.

Growing up in North Battleford, she has always prioritized giving back to her community every Christmas, from supporting struggling families to helping pay for people’s car insurance, her sponsors go up to $7,000.

Knowing there was an outbreak of scurvy this year, she decided to extend her efforts even further.

“We knew that a lot of it had to deal with not getting vitamins and things like that. So we decided to put together these dairy products, which contain a brick of cheese, butter, milk, eggs and yogurt, just to help offset the need,” she explained.

In the past six months, doctors in La Ronge have treated 27 cases of scurvy. It is a disease caused by severe vitamin C deficiency.

“I know that the holidays are really hard on people, so maybe it’ll make a bit of a difference,” Standinghorn noted.

Erin Katerynych, the executive director of BDFRC, said she was surprised when she saw the donation.

“I had no idea it was going to be that much dairy. We are so blessed to have wonderful people such as Nikki and Ed [Standinghorn’s husband] in our community who give back to the community,” she noted.

She went on to note that they would give all the food to their clients in the coming days before they closed down to prepare for their Christmas programs.

“We have so many people that will be coming to access it on the 16th, 17th and 18th, as well as the 13th, it’ll all go.”

“People are hungry, and the cost of living is just going up, so we really appreciate this, and so will the people that are getting it,” Katerynych noted.
